Here are my general comments. Its a show I may not see ,due to moving Paintings.Steven has caught my attention a few years ago ,as literally, a competitor.I dont do Art as a form of competition ,but all of a sudden you feel that edge. His work has a clarity of intention that marks him out from the crowd.I posted tonite on Instagram ,that Hoyland ,my friend and mentor ,wanted to decide how to act on the stage of the History of Art.He was a professional.I am a stumblebum by comparison,as I was always just been trying to find a way to be myself.I think if Steven wants to dip his toe in the gallery scene in NYC ,for instance ,he is going to have to decide what he is going to do,himself,in relation to this.Pictorially ,its the darks that attract,as much as the colour, and a direct attack. The fact he is an accomplished landscape Painter doesnt surprise me.If I was a viewer I would buy his work ,own it,look at it, ,enjoy it.It is unique and you /ll get much pleasure out of it.The elongated thin forms remind me of Fred Pollock .However there is a special , different sort of painterly intelligence at work here ,in the construction of depth. This is something he develops with every picture, some better than others. Not sure about the black frames. In terms of direction,we have Cezannes sense of almost inevitable development of each picture, one foot in front of another.[ How to make great art out of something as apparently mundane as a turn in the road].Quite sure about the seriousness excitement of the attack,in Stevens work.Typical of Abcrit to pick up on this. After Sarah Greenwoods show, what a terrific follow-on! Best Patrick Jones[not having seen the work.]
